My joyful job {Pittsburgh Boudoir Photographer}

OK, so I had to share this boudoir testimonial in a separate blog post because of the multiple emails I’ve received from my client.  It’s too good not to share.

Boudoir Testimonial - www.PicsByChicksPhotography.com - Pittsburgh Boudoir Photographer

The first feedback I received was when my client arrived home after her session ….  BEFORE she’d seen any photos!  You know you’re doing a great job when they are happy before they even see the finished product!

“You were absolutely wonderful! I was very nervous coming into this, but just walking in the front door to your [studio] was very warm and welcoming. You ensured you took every photo that I wanted and spent extra time. I am forever grateful as I haven’t seen the pictures yet, but just knowing the care you took with me today I know that they will fantastic. You obviously have found your true calling in life and I appreciate all you have done to make myself and woman in general feel beautiful.

Thank you again for a priceless experience. This is something I will never forget.”

Then, after seeing two preview photos, I received this email:

“These photos can’t be me, there is no way!! I think you have the wrong girl 🙂 You are absolutely amazing for sure. A miracle worker, I would say. He is going to go crazy…They are beautiful. Thank you so much.”

Next up, she was deciding on whether to allow me to share some of her photos on my blog and she wrote:

“I really do want to be able to share what I have worked so hard for. If that ever makes sense. Inspire people that this can be done. You made me feel so good about myself. You made me feel like I am beautiful again. I can compete with these women that are in magazines and that is priceless to me. Thank you for that.”

And, finally – if all the emails before weren’t enough – she sent me this after she presented her husband with the album we designed:

“I have to tell you that my husband absolutely was speechless over the album. I took him on a picnic Saturday and gave him the book and he just couldn’t stop talking about it. He couldn’t believe that I would even do something like that. He was so excited and thought the pictures were just breathtaking. I can’t thank you enough for the gift that you gave the two of us. He was stunned by the beautiful gift and this will be something he can cherish for a lifetime. I appreciate the wonderful professionalism that you have shown and your warm heart. From the moment I walked into your studio to the end product, you are just an amazing person. I was truly blessed to have come across you in my lifetime and I hope that I will do so again. You are truly an amazing photographer.  Maura you are stunning. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart.

This gift was priceless.

Sincerely and forever grateful,
[name removed]”

This last message is something I hear often when contacted about a boudoir session.  The women are sometimes nervous but know that their significant other would LOVE these kind of photos of them.  Stepping out of your comfort zone to do something for someone else can be scary but the risk is worth the reward!!! 🙂

I just have to say, if you don’t know already, that giving this experience to women brings me so much joy!  Getting to be a part of this kind of transformation is something I have a hard time putting into words.  My life is so fulfilled by the amazing women I work with, and I can’t imagine doing any other job!  Thanks to all my awesome and amazing clients!

Themed Boudoir Session – Sexy Corporate {Pittsburgh Boudoir Photographer}

I loved themed boudoir photo shoots!  They are so much fun.  These themed kind of sessions are not for everyone.  But, what I like to do is mix some traditional boudoir photos in with the themed session.  Today, we’re talking about what to wear if you are going for a super sexy corporate theme to your photos.

Boudoir Photo Shoot Themes - Sexy Corporate - 5 Items to wear to theme your boudoir photo shoot - www.PicsByChicksPhotography.com - Pittsburgh Boudoir Photographer

Here are some of my recommendations:

What to Wear - Boudoir Theme Session - Sexy Corporate - Pics By Chicks Photography - Pittsburgh Boudoir PhotographerPencil skirt

Oh yes, the must-have item for a corporate look.  A tight pencil skirt that will hug those hips and thighs.  There’s just something about these items that are super sexy.  Forget the shirt, just a bra and the skirt.  When looking for skirts, make sure you find solid colored items with very little patterns.  A pinstripe would be alright but nothing more elaborate than that.  And, when picking the bra to go with the skirt, pick a bright color.  I love having a black skirt with a pink bra!  This pencil skirt is from H&M.

Blazer & Tuxedo Jackets

Well, why not add a blazer to that super sexy skirt and bra.  Imagine a black skirt and blazer – brightly colored bra and panty.  We’ll start with the bra just peaking thru the blazer, then have a series of photos as the blazer comes off.  See, ideas are running thru my head and it can be so stunningly beautiful! As with the skirt, keep patterns limited.  Length and fit is very important when using these jackets for your session.  The blazer shouldn’t be overly long and the jacket should be form fitting to hug those curves.  This tuxedo jacket is from Target.  I love the trim of this jacket!

What corporate session would it be without some killer heels?!!?  I’m NOT talking about those boxy old heels you wear every day or even those pointy toe leather pumps.  You have to up the ante on your heels when you are theming your session like this.  Think of 3-4 inch heels with straps.  I would recommend black but some other neutral and dark colors would be OK.   These black heels are from Zappos.

Glasses

I’m not sure what it is about glasses that makes people go crazy – maybe it’s the librarian fantasy – but these are a must for a corporate themed photo shoot.  Even if you don’t wear glasses, they can be incorporated into your photos.  These Coach glasses were found on MyGlasses.com.

zulilyLingerie

There are some lingerie items that are specifically designed to look corporate!  This pinstripe halter corset would go great in a corporate themed boudoir session.  In your search for outfits, be sure to include checks for something like this – I found this item on Zulily.

STOCKINGS ARE A MUST!  Get a great pair of stockings with a garter belt!!  And thing about brining a white button down shirt!

Anything else you would wear for a sexy corporate themed session?  Leave your comments below.

Evaluating Goals {Pittsburgh Photographer}

Well, it’s been almost 2 months since I bid adieu to Corporate America.  I honestly thought that I’d constantly be wondering what’s going on at my old job, if people missed me, whether I was appreciated now that I was gone – but – I DON’T THINK ABOUT ANY OF THAT!!!  I feel so much relief after leaving that I haven’t really looked back.

Today I present another personal blog post to you…about GOALS!

When I began my photography journey, I had no intention of making this my full time profession (I do use the word profession because this is a job – I’m a small buiness owner).  Photography was just something I loved to do and I wanted to get better at it.  As I got more and more jobs, it became clear that something was going to have to give.  Photography was becoming a full time job and I couldn’t handle the pressure of 2 full-time jobs.

When you’ve found your passion, it’s hard to focus on anything else.

(Ignore the hideous cell phone quality photo…says the professional photographer)

I had so much desire to just be a photographer – nothing else.  I remember in August 2013 writing the simple goals in the above photo during a session with my mentor, Heather Lahtinen (WeddingsByHeather.com).  I sat down and we mapped out – together- exactly what I wanted my life to be.  August 2014 – Ask for Demotion.  August 2015 – Quit & be a full-time photographer.

Well, I didn’t ask for a demotion.  I knew my company wouldn’t go for it, so I stuck it out, but I knew that I wouldn’t last until August 2015.  So I hunkered down, focused and left the company full-time on 12/31/2014.  Worked for an extra few weeks as a contractor but left on 2/10/2015 – 6 MONTHS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE!!

Goals are necessary and force you to grow!

Goals are so important, and constant reminders of those goals are equally important.  This note, along with another that Heather and I wrote together were hung above my computer and I looked at it 10 times a day!  I wanted to hold myself accountable for the goals we established and looking at it each day would do just that.

This piece of paper still hangs on the wall above the computer even though I’ve accomplished these goals.  Why?

Because it reminds me that if I put my mind to it – I can accomplish anything!

Goals should be unique to you – what does success look like for me?  That is something each person needs to answer for themselves.  When I was first starting out in photography, I was thinking, “Oh, I want to be like [insert name of your favorite photographer].”  But, I quickly learned that comparing myself to others was a trap and I should not be reaching for a goal in trying to be like someone else.  For me, I have a goal for the number of boudoir shoots I do a month.  That same goal wouldn’t mean anything to another photographer!

When making your goals, define your success.  What will work for you will not work for others!  Be courageous – step out of your comfort zone and think about what your goals are – then write the steps to get you there.  But, do not – I repeat – DO NOT – compare yourself to others when defining your goals!

What are my goals for 2015?  Well, for one thing I’m working on more value added blog posts – not just blog posts with photos.  It’s a lot of work but I’m committed to this goal.  I also have some specific goals around birth photography, boudoir photography, and making connections for marketing of the business.

What goals do you have this year?

The one thing that really helps me with reaching my goals is having people around me that support my dreams.  Do you have someone that helps you define your goals?  I must give a huge shout out to two people.

First – my mentor, Heather.  She is so passionate about helping others grow … and she’s helped me do that in leaps and bounds!  She sits down with me and we go thru goals, and then throughout the year we touch base on those goals – she helps keep me accountable.  Heather has been an invaluable resource to me as I’ve made my way thru this journey, and it’s so great to have someone like her – someone so invested in my success – to help me figure out what is going to work best for me and my company!

Second – Mr. Chick.  He has been so incredibly supportive in helping me reach my dream.  He wants me to succeed in this job and is always offering moral support.  I love that I have someone by my side that knows exactly what I want and will do anything to help me achieve those goals – even if all I need is a hug when I cry! 🙂

I am loving my journey so far in 2015 and haven’t regretted leaving Corporate America for ONE SINGLE MINUTE!!

Boudoir Session Preparation – Spray Tans {Pittsburgh Boudoir Photographer}

Spray tans & general tanning are a hot topic for boudoir photographers. Should you or shouldn’t you?  It’s a hard question, and I know I have a few followers who own tanning businesses so I’m sure they’ll leave their comments on this blog post.

Blog Post - Spray Tan

There are a few concerns with tanning and spray tans in particular as it pertains to boudoir photography.  Here are a few things to consider:

1) Orange skin

A lot of spray tans make the skin orange in the photographs.  And, if not executed properly, it could be even worse.  The trouble for boudoir photographers is that the skin tone will set our camera meters into a tizzy.  Did you like that technical term?  But seriously, there is a large risk to getting a spray tan prior to your session.  Also, the spray tan can stain the bedding, props and chairs used in your photo shoot!  (Yes, it has happened) No one wants to look orange in their photos and it’s not something that can be fixed in the editing of your photos.  Even tanning beds can give you orange skin – excessive tanning has the same orange effect that spray tans can have.

2) Strong tan lines

Spray tans can give you very strong tan lines, which cannot be taken out of photos.  Tan lines are even a possibility with tanning beds and sunbathing – I even warn my summer clients about tanning outside because they will show in the photos.  Take precautions as necessary to limit tanning prior to your session.

3) Unnatural skin tones

Yes, spray tans can give you very unnatural skin tones – hello, blotchy skin.  Trust me when I say this – Natural skin tones are the best!  I don’t care if you are as pale as can be – it’s easier to add some warm tones to the photos than try to take out all the color in a attempt to make your skin look right.

4) Wrinkles

It’s no surprise to anyone that excessive tanning causes deep lines and wrinkles in your skin.  This happened to me recently – a client was, by her admission, addicted to tanning.  She had deep lines and wrinkles in her forehead that couldn’t be taken out of editing.  Tanning just has negative effects on your skin in general.

For most people, a boudoir photo shoot is a once in a lifetime experience and you want to make sure you’re doing everything you can for a successful session.  The risks of spray tans & excessive tanning are just too high and the possibilities of issues are things that cannot be fixed in the editing of photos.

I have only found one instance where a spray tan was OK.  I had a client who was an avid golfer – she was golfing 5 times a week!  From being outside this much, she had terrible tan lines from her clothes.  She received regular spray tans to account for her tan lines.  In this one case, I did recommend that she continue with her spray tans in order to cover those tan lines from her clothing.

If you MUST, please do so 4-5 days before your session.  Give the tan time to set in.  Just be cautious.  And choose a place that you’ve had this done before.  DO NOT choose to have your first spray tan right before your boudoir session.

What are you thoughts on tanning for your session?  Leave your comments below.

A Vision {Pittsburgh Boudoir Photographer}

I have had this vision for a while.  Gray background, sexy woman, fur vest, pearls, wind in the hair (as my mother would like to say).  BAM!  This happened yesterday!  My vision came to life and I was super pumped about this.  I am certainly going to attempt this again because I love the look here, and my client ROCKED IT! 🙂

As a photographer, I’m very visual and I have a hard time focusing on something else until my visions come to life.  I obsess and obsess, buy stuff, then find something else and buy it too.  It was sweet relief to get this vision out of my head and into my camera.  There’s more coming from this setup but just a few quick preview photos for now.  I’m excited to look at all the photos and get into the editing – one of my favorite parts of doing boudoir photo shoots!

Check out what I’m working on below  ….  and stay tuned for more!

After a few with the fur vest, I changed it out to this fabulous fur collar I purchased!  Because, you know, I obsess about these things so 1 vest wasn’t enough – I had to buy additional fur items in case I liked something else better!  #photographerproblems 🙂  AHHH!!!  But wow, the collar – simply awesome!
