Jackson’s Birth Story

Birth Photography Pittsburgh is provided by Maura Chick of Pics By Chicks Photography.  This is truly a special time that is captured thru amazing black & white images.  Birth photography allows your partner to put the camera down and assist in the birth – to be fully focused and present in that moment.  It is a wonderful experience that is shared by so many people and I’m so happy to be able to capture these moments for my clients.

Birth photography is all about capturing the moments as they happen and documenting this amazing experience for the parents.  There is no posing involved, no setups – everything unfolds naturally and I’m there to capture those moments in emotion provoking images.  Parents – let me work the camera while you enjoy the moments – that’s what birth photography is all about.

******

Welcome to Jackson’s Birth Story.  I am super excited to share this with you.  I got a text from Emily at 7 AM saying, “MAURA.  It’s time.”  Then a phone call at 7:30.  I was up and headed to Magee Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh!  As Frank said to one of the nurses, mine and Emily’s “relationship escalated quickly.”  Well, I laughed so hard when he said that but it’s 100% true.  This beautiful and amazing woman has truly touched my life in so many amazing ways and I was unbelievably honored to be there during this extremely special moment in their lives.

What a beautiful and blessed event that I got to witness.  Emily was so amazing during the delivery.  She was full of many different emotions and had a smile on her face – so excited to meet her son!  Yes, it was a long day for everyone but Emily was able to get some rest before starting to push.  This birth was such an awesome thing to witness – just seeing the emotion was something I have a real hard time putting into words.  Jackson was born 9/16/2015 at 3:43 PM, and Emily and Franklin’s life will never be the same.  What great parents they will be.  She made it seem easy and everything just seemed so natural to them, and Franklin was so supportive during the birthing process – whether it was making her laugh or giving her some encouragement – he was by her side thru everything.

I stuck around after the birth to capture the family coming in and even the first (and second) attempt at feeding.  I hope that Emily and Frank enjoy seeing these photos that recount their delivery experience – I know I do.  Thanks to you both for letting me share this experience with you and your families – I hope you cherish these memories!

Here’s a video of Jackson’s birth story.  What a beautiful day!  When I sent Emily the video first (because I wanted her to see everything before I released it publicly), she sent me the most incredible text message, and the part I loved about her message most was that she said Franklin was blown away and felt that having me there was the best decision they made.  Well, melt my heart … it goes to show you how impactful birth photography is to the parents – even dad felt that it was amazing to have this captured!!  My love and blessings to new mom and dad – can’t wait to witness all that life holds for you both! <3

This is the 3rd blog post featuring this beautiful woman.  I told you before it was just too good that I had to break it up into a couple different posts.  This blog post features an outfit that I loved – the whimsy nature of the fabric and that awesome color that really made it pop in the white scene!  Her session was simply perfection from beginning to end.

I love being able to celebrate women with beautiful maternity boudoir photos!  Even with a baby belly my style remains true – elegant, classy, beautiful and stunning.  Enjoy a few more photos from her session.

Think, Brainstorm and Dream Day – September 2015

As a business owner, I’ve realized that it’s extremely important to take time away from my business to focus on my business!  I think I spend far too much time IN my business – meaning – taking photos, editing, writing blog posts, corresponding with clients, etc.  I need time to focus ON my business.  And, well, I need time to dream.  Because you know what – it’s going to make me a better photographer!

GD4A6301

So, I decided that the second Tuesday of every month will be my Think, Brainstorm & Dream Day!  I’m super excited about this new addition to my schedule!

About two weeks before the day approached, I started keeping a list of things I wanted to think about.  These may be things that have been needing my attention, things that need some serious focus, some brain exercises, and some dreaming.  I started keeping a list but then decided to take it a step further.  I made an agenda and then each topic (1-12) was given it’s own piece of paper so that I had enough room to write my notes.  (My organization skills kicked into overdrive!)  I would spend at least 15 minutes on each topic and if I found my mind starting to drift away from that topic, I’d practice some quick meditation to get my focus back.

No camera, no computer, no editing, no email, no Facebook – it was disconnection time.

Here’s a summary of my day and what it means to you my loyal followers:

GD4A6305
GD4A6303
My day started with a session with my mentor, Heather, from WeddingsByHeather.com – I wanted to get my mind set right from the beginning so I thought Heather would be a good place to start.  But, I told her that I wanted to walk outside to think and talk thru some things.  Changing your environment is crucial to getting your brain to see things in a new way (see I’m learning things from all the books I’m reading this year).  So we walked around her property and began discussions on some of the things on my list.  It was great!  Of course, it was terribly hot the day I chose as my Think Day but we braved the weather – nothing was holding me back!

My original plan was to hike into the woods and spend the rest of the day going thru everything I had scheduled in nature.  I wanted to be somewhere where nothing could distract me – I really wanted to focus.  There are too many distractions in the studio for me to sit there and do what I wanted to do with this day.  Since it was so hot, I opted for the library.  Not the best but it will do, or so I thought.  There were some loud people at the library that day so after an hour and half, I went to sit outside overlooking the river.  It was very peaceful!

I got thru all my topics, summarized what I’d wrote, developed action items for those topics, read from my most recent book, prayed and ended my day on a real high note.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

1) This was the best day and I’m looking forward to next month’s Think Day.

2) This energized me and gave me more focus.  Stepping away form everything allows you to concentrate on just those things that need your attention without all the distractions.

3) I got a lot of focus around some things that I have been neglecting for a few months now.  It made me realize that some of the things I was putting off are very important.

4) I kick butt.  Funny but true.

Here are some of the things I’ve decided:

(Not going to share all my topics with you because you’ll see those come about in the next few months as I put some of the action items into motion)

1) I want to photograph something for fun once a month.  Photography started as a passion and hobby and it’s now a business.  Two very different things.  I still want to be able to connect with this hobby I love so I’m going to be doing something for fun every month.  Whether this is a styled shoot or learning some new techniques or doing some urban photography – something.

This is where my fans come in – I may be putting out requests to find willing participants to help me bring my ideas to fruition.  Please be following our Facebook page to see those requests for participants! 🙂

2) I’m going to be blogging more about weddings.  For 2015, I have been blogging boudoir photo shoot planning tips and tricks and I’ve loved it!  I love sharing my knowledge with people, so I’m going to start something similar for weddings!

3)  Dreaming is good for the imagination.  I like to dream about what my perfect life looks like and those dreams will become a reality.

4) I’m going to focus more on me.  Wow.  Did I just say that?!?  But, what I mean is that I’m just going to focus on Maura and Pics By Chicks Photography.  I’m not going to concern myself with what other photographers are doing.  This is something I started doing about a year ago but I’m going to take it to a new level!  The only photographer I should compare myself to is Maura from 3 years ago – yikes! 🙂  My only job is to become the best photographer I can be.  I truly feel that God has given me this talent and my relational abilities with women to be an amazing photographer, and that’s how I am to serve the world!

That’s just a quick summary of my day.  Can’t wait for October.  I will make two changes for October – 1) I will get in the woods, as was my original intention with September’s day; 2) I will not bring my phone.  Our phones have become such a distraction to our world and on this day, I want to give my full attention to my topics!

Super excited about this planning day!!!  🙂

So, let’s begin….

herroomFirst up is an item from HerRoom.com – I love these halter teddies, and I especially love the lace of this item.  I love lace!  This comes in a few different color options and is only $22!  Style this up with some awesome jewelry and you are good to go!

BNNext up is this cute babydoll set from Bare Necessities.  I love lace and I love ruffles – put those two together and they make for a great outfit for your photo shoot.  Plus, they give your photographer a great chance to get amazing detail shots, which certainly add to your collection.  This item is also great for bridal boudoir too, and is only $36.

fredericksWell, well!  This is an outfit that I’ve photographed a few times and I LOVE IT!  This is so super sexy – all the straps and the mesh see thru top!  Wow!  I loved it even more when I found out it was only $38.50.  This item is available from Fredericks of Hollywood.  There are a few different color options to this teddy.

torridHere’s an item for my ladies with curves!  This is a beautiful item from Torrid – I love the light color and the details around the best.  This is also great if you are concerned about your tummy area, as it does a great job concealing that area.  This chemise is only $38.50.

modclothLook at this awesome corset from ModCloth.  I love the details on this item and the ruffles on the strap – perfection!  This is reasonably priced at $39.99.  The matching panties are extra but you could easily wear a pair of cute black panties you already have in your closet!

You can always incorporate things you already have that can be made super sexy with some styling and posing.  Think of sweaters or tank tops in this case.  They make great pieces to your shoot!

If you are on a budget, it’s very important to shop around.  There are great items out there on many different sites that can fit into your budget.

Shae’s Senior Portraits

Pittsburgh senior photos by Pics By Chicks Photography servicing Pittsburgh, Beaver County, Butler County and Lawrence County.  Details on our senior photo pricing can be found by clicking here.  You can also begin the scheduling process online by completing our senior questionnaire.

Shae is a senior at New Brighton High School and let me just start by saying how fabulous she is!  Her session was so much fun from beginning to end!

When Shae’s mom contacted me about her session, we discussed location and what they were looking for with her senior photos.  Mom seemed to want more of a nature feel and Shae seemed to be more into the urban feel.  Well, problem solved.  One of my favorite locations has a great mixture of both urban and nature and I love being able to use this spot in my senior photo shoots.

Thank you so much Shae and Lisa for a wonderful time with you both!  I love that I can smile and laugh during my shoots.  I have so much fun and love this job so incredibly much!  How lucky am I?!?! 🙂

Enjoy some photos from her senior session.

Our next stop was an urban area with some cool brick work.  I asked Shae if I could remove the graffiti on the doors and walls of this location – she said NO!  So…I obliged – graffiti and all!  After all, these are her photos not mine, so if she wants that in, then it stays.  But, don’t worry mom – I’ll get some great urban photos without graffiti (see below).
