As a boudoir photographer, I hear a lot – “Oh, I don’t have a good body” or “I don’t want to be naked” or “I don’t want to show a lot of skin”

Everyone is different.  Everyone’s comfort level is different.  I’m going to dispel a big myth with this next statement (ready….) — Boudoir photographs don’t need to be over the top and in your face sexy.

It’s the hint of seductiveness – not overt.  Implied images make the mind wander.  Look at the below photos from one of my recent boudoir sessions.  You don’t see much skin but it conveys a message.  Imagine what comes after she drinks her tea.  That’s sexy.

Of course, there were other images from this session that I’m not going to show on my website but these are proof that sexy doesn’t mean that you have to be sprawled out on a bed in next to nothing.  Sexy can be defined by many different things – a certain look, the position of the hands, a tilt of the head, a slight part of the lips..the list goes on.  One element can make a photo sexy!

I’ve had a few men contact me about purchasing a boudoir photo session for their spouse as a gift.  I ask them, “What would you find sexy about her photos?”  I was surprised by some of the answers but I heard from them that it’s the subtle boudoir photos that intrigue them because their mind gets to create what they think happens next!  Hmm, very good point!

My passion is boudoir photography.  My job is to make you look and feel as beautiful as you are!  I want your beauty to shine thru in your images.  I want you to be excited.  I want you to have fun.  Your comfort level is fully respected – I just want to give you an uplifting, pampered day!  Who wouldn’t want to feel like a supermodel for a day?!?

My wedding advice {Pittsburgh Wedding & Engagement Photographer}

As we continue to get more and more inquiries for wedding photography, I thought it would be a good time to share my wedding advice to couples that are planning their weddings.  Just a few things I’d like to tell you about your big day…..

1) Write your own vows.  It’s personal, very personal.  And, it gives your guests a chance to really connect with you both during the ceremony, as you are sharing these personal feelings in front of them.  Tony and I decided to do both the traditional vows and our own vows.  It may have taken a little more work on our part but we got so many complements on the vows.  This is an important moment in your lives together and it’s so special to make the vows you exchange personal.

2) Observe your wedding.  This was advice I received from our DJ.  Take a step back at the reception and observe your family and friends enjoying the night.  You planned an amazing party for them – watch as they enjoy it.  You’ll get a kick out of seeing everyone dance, everyone laughing.  It’s worth a couple minutes away – sneak into the corner and take a mental snapshot of what’s happening around you.

3) Roll with the punches.  Something will go wrong.  It always does.  The day before our wedding Tony got laryngitis.  He couldn’t speak at the rehearsal and he could hardly say his vows (but he got them out like a champ!).  As for me, when we were announced at the reception, we entered from the balcony.  Unbeknownst to me, someone had spilled something on the steps and I slipped … and almost fell coming down the stairs..I twisted my ankle pretty bad.  You can hear the gasps in our wedding video.  The embarrassment lasted a few minutes but I certainly laugh about it now.  Something will go wrong.  Just brush it off and go with it.  The things that may frustrate you the day of the wedding will be the things that you look back and laugh and say, “Well, that’s us!”

4) Get unplugged.  I really wish that all brides and grooms would have unplugged weddings.  Ask your guests to put their cell phones and iPads down.  Enjoy the moment.  Especially during the ceremony.  Be in the moment, be there with the couple.  I wouldn’t want people waiting with their phone to stick it up in the air as soon as you kiss.  This advice may come from me more as a photographer than a prior bride, but the stories you read about the professional photographer’s pictures being ruined because of someone’s cell phone camera flash going off are true.  Or guests stepping into the aisle to snap a photo.  Be unplugged, get connected with the people around you, not those in cyberspace!

5) Photographs are important.  I wouldn’t be a good photographer if I didn’t mention how important photographs are for your big day.  Take it from me.  Photos are important.  They’re important.  Did you know they’re important? haha.  I can say this with a heavy heart from personal experience.  We do not have good photos from our wedding – I do not have enough quality photos that I can make an album.  This makes me sad.  To top if off, I do not have a bridal portrait of myself on the day I felt the most beautiful.  Honestly.  I cry when I think about this.  I spent time and money searching for & purchasing a dress, getting my makeup done, trying to lose weight, etc – and I don’t have a beautiful photo of myself on that day.  I’ve heard some brides and grooms say they just want candid photos – and I LOVE candid photos – but you ALWAYS need some portraits.  Always.  Don’t make my same mistake.  Even when a bride and groom tell me that they want only candid – I always make sure to take some portraits.  You will regret the decision to only have candid photos.  Allow time for photographs.  Allow time for your photographer to capture your beauty, love and joy on your wedding day!

What other advice do you have for brides and grooms planning their weddings?  The good, the bad, the ugly.  Any experience you want to pass on to someone else?  Leave your comments below!

Why Photography? {Pittsburgh Boudoir, Wedding & Family Photographer}

As always at this time of year I reminisce about our journey over the prior year.  What worked?  What didn’t?  What do we need to change?  How do we need to focus better?

Then, someone asked me, “Why be a photographer?”  My simple answer was “I love it!”  And, I do.  I’m so thankful to have this little thing called photography and have clients that trust us to provide them with beautiful images.

But, as I thought deeper about this – just loving it wasn’t a good enough reason on WHY photography.  And, all the sudden like a ton of bricks it hit me.  Probably what Oprah would call an “A HA” moment (although I’ll admit I was never really into Oprah but I’ve heard this expression).  While editing one of our family photo sessions I just started crying when I was looking at the father and his kids (see first photo below).  I realized – I do not have any photos like that with my sisters and my dad.  No good professional photos from our childhood exist.  No photos (except for a nasty church directory photo) exist of my parents and us girls.  My parents divorced when I was 13 and we certainly can’t go back and recreate those moments with my family.  I know things were different back then  (not like I’m that old) but I would so cherish nice photos with my family so that I can fondly think of those times.

As a kid, you don’t have a ton of memories, right?  I know I don’t.  But, I would love to look at photos of all of us together – laughing, enjoying each other.  This is one of the reasons I love family photo shoots – this is one of the reasons I love to get natural reactions from our clients – this is one of the reasons I give you outtakes in your final product!  You will cherish every moment – from the beginning when we start to photograph to the end result with awesome images.

When an older member of my family dies (not trying to take a turn for the worse here but..), we always get together and pull out the shoeboxes of old pictures.  You know what I’m talking about…everyone does it.  But, in this digital age, will people still be doing this?!?  I hope so.  That’s why I want you to print photos from your sessions, put them on your walls.  Then, when you have new photos to replace those, keep them in a box.  They will be enjoyed again!

Enjoy every single second of your family photo shoots.  Don’t get stressed worrying about clothes and hair, or even your child’s behavior.  Cherish these precious moments with your family!!!!

Outtake!  Wouldn’t you look back on this photo and just laugh your butt off! 🙂 I know I laugh every time I look at it!

I’d love a photo like this with my mother!

So natural.  You can’t script this!

A Year in Review {Pittsburgh Boudoir & Wedding Photographer}

2013 was a great year for Pics By Chicks Photography.  We’ve been extremely blessed with some amazing clients, and you’ve each touched our lives in amazing ways.  Thanks for your consistent support.  We look forward to serving you in 2014 and the many years to come!

I look back at 2013 with great fondness.  Our photography business has grown tremendously.  I was scared to take the leap into photography – all the things that people worry about in life came to my mind – are we good enough? Will we survive?  How do we stand apart from everyone else?  Will people like us?

I really feel that our year was successful.  Many clients, many different photographic opportunities – we spread our wings for sure!  We’ve been working on standing out from other photographers – what makes us different?  Well, the experience makes us different.  I love that our clients have fun during their sessions – we like to laugh … and I [Maura] have been known to openly make fun of Tony!  That’s our schtick! 🙂 Our Christmas Mini-Sessions – I spent hours making chocolate chip cookies – so that after the shoots we could spend time with our clients eating cookies and drinking milk!  We love to get to know everyone.  It’s an experience with The Chicks!  Let us give you an experience in 2014!!!

We had so many laughs during our photo shoots.  As I think back over the year, I keep coming back to one particular moment that stopped us all in our tracks.  The winner of the funniest moment from 2013 photo shoots……..drum roll……the dubious honor belongs to the Platts family.  During their session, Sara and H’s son, Simon, looked at me and said, “Is that your dad?”  He was referring to Tony!  Oh goodness! 🙂 I just laughed.  For those of you that don’t know – Tony is older than me…but I assure you – he is my husband, not my father!  We had a great laugh!!!  I’m sure Sara & H were embarrassed but we found it hysterical.  We make fun of ourselves so we can easily laugh at the things kids say!

We’ve made decisions on how to focus our photography for 2014 – that means eliminating some services from our offerings and working on developing those areas of photography we absolutely love!  2014 is going to be a great year for us and we are so excited for what is ahead.

Here is a collection of some photos from 2013 sessions!  Thanks again to our amazing clients – your support has been so amazing – and we are forever grateful to you for all you’ve done to build our business!

Happy New Year!

Much love,

Maura & Tony Chick
